Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!2 Corinthians 9:15 NIV
The word for ‘gift’ here is dōrea. It is used 10 times in the New Testament, mostly associated with the Holy Spirit or God’s grace. And in this passage it would seem to be associated with the surpassing grace that God had given to the Corinthian believers.
God’s grace is indescribable. We can easily define it as ‘unmerited favor’. And it is. But it is so much more than that. God’s grace impacts everything that he does. It is by God’s grace that we even exist. Our salvation comes to us through God’s grace. His Spirit’s presence within us is an act of God’s grace. His equipping of us for his service is an act of God’s grace. And it is by his grace that we can look forward to an eternity with him.
In this passage, God’s surpassing grace has given the Corinthian believers the ability to participate in this financial gift being collected for the saints around Jerusalem. Even the money I have to put into the offering plate is the result of God’s grace. Is there any part of my life that God’s grace does not impact? I do not believe so.
Thanks be to God for his indescribably gift of grace.
