The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch. – Acts 11:26b NIV
There is some debate as to what the name Christian means, little Christ or Christ followers, and who coined the name, whether the disciples themselves or those around them. But most scholars seem to believe that it was a term applied by outsiders and that it was at least somewhat derisive. If that is the case then the disciples must have really stuck out in their society; after all, if they had blended in there would be no reason for calling them names.
I wonder; if we did not already have an identifying label today, what would our communities call us? Or would they even recognize that we were different?
